Irresistible (2006)

I watched it on 2006–04–13, Thursday. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448564/ My rating: 6/10 I was expecting a rosy movie, but “Irresistible” is what most will categorize as a thriller. Buy it at: amazon.co.uk ; amazon.com ; Above, DVD cover.

King Kong (2005)

I watched it on 2006–04–14, Friday night. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0360717/ My rating: 7/10 This is a 3 hours (!) long movie that tells exactly the same story that the original King Kong did. The first hour – when the only primates on screen are humans –, delivers one very solid character: Carl Denham, played by Jack Black. The [...]

Princesas (2005)

I watched it on 2006–04–15, Saturday night. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434292/ My rating: 7/10 This is a very professional spanish movie about two prostitutes, one “local”, the other an illegal migrant, from Dominican Republic. This is a simple, believable story, set on “real life” places, with great acting! Because I watched it shortly after “Family Stone (2005)”, I [...]

The Family Stone (2005)

I watched it on 2006–04–09, Sunday. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0356680/ This is, by far, the worst movie I’ve seen this century. “The Family Stone” (2005) is unbelievably shallow, empty, void, meaningless and predictable. This film opens a dangerous precedent, since it is supported by a decent budget and it casts decent actors and actresses, yet it utterly fails [...]

Hostel (2005)

I watched it on 2006–03–24, Saturday. http://imdb.com/title/tt0450278/ What started as one of the most conventional and unimaginative “movies with teenagers, on holidays”, evolved to a solid gore festival, somewhat like George Romero’s most explicit works. The one question, that matters me, for this kind of (horror) movie is: does it entertain? Yes it does! What [...]

Derailed (2005/I)

I watched it on 2006–03–26, Sunday. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398017/ I was very surprised with the flow of the movie. During its first half, the viewer calmly follows the daily rotine of the Schine family: father, mother and diabetic (type 1…) daughter. One singular event will break this rotine and endanger the trio – that is when the [...]

Where the Truth Lies (2005)

I watched it on 2006–03–07, Tuesday. http://imdb.com/title/tt0373450/ This is the worst movie I’ve ever seen, starring Kevin Bacon. There is just too much bla bla bla bla bla. The narrators (yes, more than one), never stop narrating, which borders the opposite of what a good motion picture should do. There is nothing wrong with the [...]

An Unfinished Life (2005)

I watched it on 2006–03–12, Sunday. http://imdb.com/title/tt0350261/ Because of Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman, I was expecting a consistent movie, but there are problems with the Jean Gilkyson character, performed by Jennifer Lopez. While all the sub plots orbit the “accept other people’s past, because they can’t do nothing about it now” theme, Jean is  [...]

The Village (2004)

I watched it on 2006–03–05, Sunday. http://imdb.com/title/tt0368447/ This is a superb “horror” movie. The audio is very good on supporting a dense atmosphere, and all fear is born from the questions the viewer poses, regarding what’s going on, when very little information is available. This is what I call “cerebral horror”. My rating: 8/10

Oscars 2006

Below is a link to 2006’s Oscars nominees and winners: http://imdb.com/ri/RTE_HP/TOP_BUCKET/31094//features/rto/2006/oscars I didn’t read the list of winners with great attention and I don’t value the Oscars more than I value regular festivals, which is to say, the Oscars have nearly null influence on my opinions. Still, this year’s “best motion picture of the year” [...]
