Yesterday GIL had babies! However some people have experienced strange colors with GIL and its offspring. That should NOT happen. If GIL doesn't appear to you ONLY in blue tones, drop me a line and tell me about your Creatures 2 installation. Are you running 16 bits color? GIL is just one of my public computer projects.
The Internet 2 is almost 1 month old
The "Internet 2" will be one month old, next wednesday, day 24 March 1999. The project directed by the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development, is based on the Abilene Network and was established in 1996, with the cooperation of Cisco, Qwest and Nortel, who provided most of the infrastructure, consisting in loads of fiber optics and gigabit routers.
The "Internet 2" will provide the participant universities, with a very high speed network which can be used to build and test tomorrow's internet applications. The main purpose is to RAISE the standards of nowadays' network software, too much worried with bandwidth limitations.
At this precise moment, there are 37 universities connected to the "Internet 2", but this number will grow... as more and more academic and research institutions want their share of the 2.4 Gbps available :-) That G is for Giga.
Nortel is providing the software, and that includes some high performance networking protocols. The Fiber optics comes from Qwest, as you may have guessed, and the routers are from Cisco. Current state of the art over "Internet 2" is software that manages to grab +600 Mbps just for itself... Remember that fast ethernet runs at a 100 Mbps peak...
Not long ago, NFS3 was hitting the shelves, and now, NFS4 is here, at least for the SONY PLAYSTATION. NFSx is one of the most successful arcade racing game series of all times, but never had it registered such a short development time between versions. There is one week left for NFS4... must wait...
American OnLine was considered the fastest Internet service provider via dial-up connection, which is quite a surprise, given the HUGE number of clients that the company has. However, it seems that the test conducted by Inverse Network Technology was too much centered on top popular websites, meaning that the best web cache strategies would make a big difference... and AOL is caching all the time...
The truth: MP4 eats MP3 for lunch
Oh yes! I've been trying some MP4 samples with some high quality audio hardware, including my PARADIGM REFERENCE STUDIO 100 floor standing speakers... and it rocks! It is much better than MP3 on bass and high pitched voices.
